It's Brisbane Tonight - Wow!

Pre-production

Bringing it all up to date:

Micky
  • August 2005 - Friend and Brisbane comedian Mick Steel gave me a script - alternatively titled Brisbane Madanic or It's Brisbane Tonight - Wow!
  • The script centres around Rick (Mick) - or should that be Rick/Mick!! A stand up comedian who goes to a local community TV station hoping to get some ideas made. Whilst there he meets Lee the host of the local tonight chat show ~ as fate would have it there is a huge storm that night which prevents the guests from arriving so Rick ends up impersonating them on the show - whilst the real guests watch with mounting anger from the bar they are holed up in
  • I knew then and there as soon as I read it that it was an extremely funny script and we had to do it!

Status/Comments

Nov 09 New draft of script completed
Nov  35mm DOF adaptor set up and working  I've already got a 35mm Canon lense - it's only 2 times zoom though - don't know if we need more? So I just need to get the remaining parts as per the video above
Feb 10 Casting completed  Alot of the main roles are already cast - but there will be a public call when the new script draft is done
Mar Crew completed  As per above
April All locations sourced  Most of it is actually in the one location - the TV studio. I'm looking for realistic sets - as per one of my maxims - find or build the reality and film in it -- another maxim: the sets must be as realistic as the acting!
April All sound and lighting gear acquired  Most of this is covered now - but just need a few more bits and pieces
May Shot list completed  Want to be very well prepared!
May/Jun Rehearsals  Obligatory!
Jun 26- Jul 11 Principal photography  These dates are actually the school holidays, which frees are few people up (makes us sound like school kids!!) -- but the aim is to shoot as much in that time frame as possible and pick up the rest afterwards around peoples work and time commitments

  • Here's a quick snap of the first 36 scenes of the script layed out on the index cards -- this is the first time I've ever used this method and I'm finding it very very useful - you really can get a good overview with it and step back a bit - and it's helping greatly in the writing and inserting of new scenes

  • I must say it takes hours to write out 100+ of these bloody things though LOL! - but it's worth the effort -- you only put scene number, description and a few notes on them anyway

  • The film features a film within the film - just a short comedy made by Mick's character Rick  - and I think we might shoot this on 16mm or Super 8 -- just because I can't help myself!! ;-)   (Got to get that R16 out!)

  • Well alot has been happening since I last posted. First of all we've had alot of auditions and have most of the parts cast now - and a very talented cast it is too - and we've also got most of the crew in place as well. Still looking for a few positions - but overall it's shaping up very well with some very good and keen crew members who have already hit the ground running (Jess, Dom and Amanda I'm talking to you !!)

  • So that's the good news - the bad news for us is that Jo unfortunately has had to drop out owing to the success of her play which has now got a run on the Gold Coast right through the middle of our shooting period :-(  But it's great news for Jo and is the start of some well deserved success in this area - as she originally optioned, developed and produced the show as well as starring in it. It looks like it is going to have a national run next year as well which is fantastic so we wish Jo all the best with this. Auditions are scheduled for a few weeks time for the part of Lee and I'm already being flooded with interest

  • I have also recently returned from Cannes and MIPTV where amongst other things I discussed the current positive status of the film with HandMade Films, who are keen to see the end result when it is ready.

  • With the exception of filling the part of Lee our focus is firmly on getting the locations sorted out - which we should have confirmed in the next few weeks.
  • We've also started a facebook fan page for the film as well - click the logo to join up and come along for the ride!

  • We've completed out auditions for the part of Lee and I'm very pleased to announce that she will be played by Sonia Ball. Sonia suits the part down to a tee and it's great to have her on board.

  • The other major announcement is Andrew Conder as our DOP. Andrew has a great list of credits and we really look forward to working with him on the film as well.

  • Location scouting is going on at the moment and rehearsals will start in a few weeks in June --- more soon :-)

14/6/2010
  • Rehearsals started last week - concentrating on the leads at the moment - Mick and Sonia aka Rick and Lee

  • There's the possibility of pushing the shoot back approximately one month owing to the availability of one location where we can shoot a number of scenes (principally the studio pieces - which is the bulk of the film). All the major cast and crew are available if we go back a month - so we'll find out in fortnight if we do it or not.

  • We have a modest budget - but could do with a bit more so have been discussing various fund raising activities -- stay tuned for some announcements soon - we'll be having a meeting the weekend after next to start organising this, but some pretty good ideas are being thrown around already.

  • We had a camera crew meeting last Satuday down at the Gold Coast, between myself, Dan (camera op) and Andrew (DOP) - with Mick and Sonia present as well. We started some basic tests with the DOF adaptor on the HF11 - it was only quick, but it looked good - Andrew and Dan are continuing the tests over the coming week to get more of a thorough idea of how it might work or not. The shallow DOF looked good, but the difficulty of focussing moving shots could be a deal breaker. HOWEVER there's the possibility we might end up shooting it on a Canon 7D DSLR which would be awesome and circumvent all the problems, whilst giving us a 35mm DOF -- I'll just have to get used to the fact they look weird on a tripod on a movie set! (ahem...)

  • Dan's got some really cool gear - including this steadicam rig - see pic at left - in which the HF11 is fitted with the DOF adaptor, and with a video output to an inverted LCD monitor down the bottom of the rig. We envision using the steadicam alot - but more for speed than handheld mockumentary style -- we won't be going that far - the film will look like a normal feature, not a mockumentary.
  • I'll post some of the DOF adaptor test clips when I get the camera back

9/8/2010
  • Wow it's been a long long time since updates - but that's because we've been busy busy busy
  • Rehearsals are now in full flow - and after all those dramas I'd forgotten how much fun comedies were to work on! The script is very very funny and we're adding jokes to it as we go -- all the cast is on song --> so we better not stuff anything up because this has the potential to be really good!
  • Most of the locations are locked down - we will be shooting at QPIX for most of the interior studio work, and one of the other locations we are pleased to announce is the Queensland Museum
  • The camera tests worked out pretty well - see the clip below -- however pulling focus on a steadicam could be a bit of an issue - but it's almost definite now we will shoot on 7D DSLR which will give us all the benefits and none of the challenges of how we were originally planning to do it.

  • However the big news is our fundraiser at Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast on Saturday the 4th of September - and will feature bubbly on arrival, a fabulous lunch, fashion show, lucky door prizes, and the opportunity to meet the stars of the show Mick Steel, and Sonia Ball
